The Gutsy Lady Botanists

In the 1800s Emanual D. Rudolph, compiling information from available lists, found that 1,185 women had some kind of “active” botanical connection; mostly they made plant collections and belonged to botany clubs. Of this number, only a few dozen, at most, made what could be called, possibly, a significant contribution. Still, botany was obviously considered a suitable subject for young women to study; in 1887, an article appeared. in Science titled “Is Botany a Suitable Study for Young Men?” Nevertheless, botanist Alice Eastwood probably made it look too easy when in the late 1800s she deftly made her professional way in a field dominated by men. It seems entirely likely that her unique personality opened doors that would have remained closed had she been less confident and vital. Certainly, two Colorado women who followed her, Hazel Schmoll and Ruth Ashton Nelson, had a rougher time of it; Hazel finally gave up, whereas Ruth was forced to change her goals. It wasn’t until the 1970s that a woman, Katherine Bell Hunter, undertook botanical research so innovative and dangerous that it was considered a remarkable endeavor for any botanist, male or female.
